30 January 2010

Not really a “Cramped Caravanner” yet, but getting closer. The “Crotchety” is a given. High School friend, Sara Johnson Neal, is doing a California- Hawaii-California and arrives Hilo 20 February. That is the last commitment here.
My self-promise of clearing out years of keepsakes, memorabilia, and pure junk has become a daunting task. Okay... a task that I started, kept putting off, and am finally being forced into completing. I heard a trailer for the TV show “Hoarders.” This poor person had only narrow paths through her house. The hoarder confessed to her therapist that all of her hoardings represented times of her life, both good and bad. She felt that if she let go of these material representations of those times, she would also lose those times of her life. I am not usually moved by TV show trailers, but two or three carloads of old linens no longer seemed so necessary.
Current plan of action:
· put the house in order
· depart Hilo for Orange Park, Florida after 20 February
· equip the camper van (talk about daunting task)
· do a shake-down trip (Orange Park-Jefferson City-St. Louis-Orange Park)
· if we survive the above trip, put van on a ship for southern Spain
· take a very deep breath and get on the plane
